Processing Engineering Skills at Hello Australia
All Skilled Migration Visa applicants require skills assessment before applying for their visa to the Department of Immigration and citizenship (DIAC). Engineers are assessed by Engineers Australia (EA). This used to be called the Institute of Engineering, Australia (IEAust).

Applicants from countries where English is not the mother tongue must hold an IELTS test certificate at Competency Level, with at least 6.0 on each component and an overall score of at least 6.0. This is the standard required in Australia for University entry for undergraduate study.
Competent English means the applicant for the Engineers Australia skills assessment will be able to understand the booklet, and has good enough English to write the CDR.
Engineers Australia have a comprehensive booklet on how to apply, available online. It is particularly valuable to those doing a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR). The CDR is needed from people who did not attend an Accord University overseas, or an Australian University.
Hello Australia – how we help with your CDR
The CDR is difficult because many Engineers never been asked to prove their ability by writing up “Career Episodes”. We prefer to call them “Engineering Projects”. Write up three Engineering Projects from your career as an Engineer. References can be from any source.
To help shape the CDR, we have Jim Heath our consultant, with a background in Physics, Mathematics and Engineering. Jim is also a professional writer of technical information, business reports and speeches, and non-fiction books. His job is to guide you through the CDR. Sometimes we get desperate people asking Jim to WRITE the CDR for them. This is not permitted by Engineers Australia – it has to be an Engineers own experience, where they proved their abilities in engineering.
Jim helps you through, until you have a finished CDR, made up of three episodes.
When we receive your CDR with supporting documents back in our office, Mary will take over as the Migration Agent.
Your supporting documents of evidence will be checked by us to make sure they are correct:
- Your English IELTS certificate must be at the correct level.
- Your work experience documents must cover Engineering duties, the length of employment and your salary, as per EA requirements.
- Your qualification certificates and transcripts have been sent to us correctly presented, and translated if necessary.
- You have filled in all the EA cover sheets.

This is a letter from Jim about the CDR service:
Services for Australian visa applicants who want support with their Engineers Australia Competency Demonstration Report (CDR).
The Skills Assessment section of Engineers Australia have told me that I am allowed to help CDR applicants in the following ways:
- Help you choose career episodes that will best demonstrate your competencies.
- Check the CDR that you write and make sure it matches the required style and formatting. Also point out areas that need to be clearer or that need more emphasis.
- Check that the CDR demonstrates your own initiative and leadership and does not dwell on the team effort.
- Point out omissions.
- Suggest other items that are not required but would be beneficial to include.
Please note that I am not allowed to write or edit any of your CDR text. The writing must be all your own work.
I am in a good position to help you. I have degrees in engineering and mathematics and have been a Technical Editor on major engineering projects in Australia. In addition to helping visa applicants with their CDRs, I have written lengthy submissions to Engineers Australia for mining companies and have taught engineers and managers how to improve their writing and presentations.
